The Last Wednesday Celebration

Sebagian besar orang Banyuwangi merayakan Rebo Wekasan pada hari terakhir Sapar. Hal ini erat hubungannya dengan kepercayaan bahwa pada hari itu adalah waktu yang penuh dengan marabahaya. Kemudian masyarakat mengunjungi tempat-tempat sunyi sepeti pantai dan sumber mata air untuk merenung.

Prosesi diawali dengan doa bersama dipimpin kyai, kemudian dilanjutkan dengan larung sesaji oleh para penari gandrung ke Selat Bali diikuti beberapa perahu yang telah dihias. Lomba perahu layar, dan pertunjukan tari tradisional disajikan.

Namun bagi mereka yang tingal jauh dari pantai, seperti daerah Kemiren, Kecamatan Glagah, mengadakan selamatan di mata air sungai , agar mata air tersebut selalu mengalir selamanya.

THE LAST WEDNESDAY CELEBRATION

On the last Wednesday of Sapar (the calendar of java) most people in Banyuwangi celebrate “Rebo Wekasan”. The celebration has closed relation with the believe of society that every the last Wednesday of Sapar is full of danger and misfortune. The people, then, leave their activities and visit a quiet place: such as beach, and spring water to have a spiritual activity.

The ceremony is started by praying together lead by Muslim preacher, afterwards a boat with a goat’s head and other offering released in bali straight follow by gandrung dancers. Sail boat catches and other attraction are held.

On the other hand, the people who lived far from the beach, like the village of Kemiren sub district of Glagah have the celebration at the spring water along river in their village, so the spring water still waters the river forever.
