Kebo-keboan alas malang ritual ceremony

Awalnya, upacara ini diadakan untukmemohon turunnya hujan saat kemarau panjang. Dengan turunnya maka petani akan bisa memulai bercocok tanam.

Dalam upacara ini, atraksi menarik yang bisa disaksikan adalah: saat persiapan, pada malam hari sebelum acara pada keesokan hari, masyarkaat bergotong royong memasang hiasan di sepanjang jalan utama desa, yang terdiri dari hasil panen berupa pala gumantung (buah-buahan), pala kependet (umbi-umbian) dan pala kesimpir (kacang-kacangan). Semua ini melambangkan kesuburan dan kesejahteraan.

Prosesi upacara, diawali dengan selamatan di tengah jalan pada pagi hari, sesaji kue dan nasi tumpeng diberi doa yang dipimpin oleh kyai, kemudian dibagikan kepada para pengunjung dan masyarakt sekitar. Kue dan makanan disiapkan oleh masing-masing keluarga dan disajikan untuk para tamu dan sanak family yang berkunjung.

Selanjutnya, acara idher bumi yang diikuti oleh beberapa laki-laki bertubuh kekar dengan dandanan dan bertingkah seperti kerbau yang dihalau oleh para petani lengkap dengan bajaknya. Seorang putri cantik melambangkan Dewi Sri ditandu oleh beberapa pengawal dengan pakaian khas untuk meramaikan suasana. Musik dan tari tradisional mengiringi arak-arakan ini.

Sebagai puncak acara adalah prosesi membajak sawah dan menanam bibit padi. Para kerbau manusia seperti kesurupan mengejar siapa pun yang mencoba mengambil bibit padi yang ditanam. Masyarkat berebut mendapatkan bibit padi itu karena percaya bisa dipakai tolak bala atau mendatangkan keberuntungan. Kegiatan ini berakhir pada tengah hari. Sementra pada sore dan malam kesenian tradisional disajikan, termasuk pagelaran wayang kulit semalam suntuk.

KEBO-KEBOAN ALAS MALANG RITUAL CEREMONY

It is considered as the most unique ceremony on this island which has the aspects of fertility rite (relates to fertile, healthy, prosperous, growth and purification ceremony). Thanks giving an expression of gratitude to god for peaceful, happiness and better crops for the forthcoming year. And this ceremony used to be done for requesting the rainfall and better cultivation.

Visitor are always welcomed to observe and participate this interesting ceremony. A night before, along main road is decorated with all different result of harvest such as banana, oranges, cassava, soya bean, and many other crops. They are all symbolizing prosperity.

Before the ritual of kebo-keboan may take place, many tumpeng (rice cones) have been made in the morning tumpeng, cakes, and other offering are put on the road after being blessed by kyai (a muslim preacher). Selamatan (praying) is over the tumpeng may be eaten and distributed to all visitor and to the community. Cake and special meals made by every household are offered and served to visitor who attend the events.

Afterward, the procession of soil is held. Some strong big men colored themselves black, behaving strangely as wild water buffaloes chased by the farmer with their plows, while, a beautiful girl symbolizing Dewi Sri, The Goddess Of Padi is shouldered by her followers appearing the interesting traditional costume. This procession is highlighted by traditional dances and gamelan music orchestra.

The climax of this events is the time of plowing and planting rice. When trance buffalomen chasing after anyone who tries to take the rice seed. The seed is believed to have supernatural power toward of plant diseases, good crops, and to bring fortune t those who are able to get it.

The ceremony ended at midday. In the afternoon, traditional dances as well as the shadow puppet show are performed.
